The envelope is to do with caller display.
You need to press the CDS button which is is on the top right and is like two people with a P beside them. Use the up and down arrows to scroll through the list of recent callers. When you reach the end there will be a beep and the envelope symbol will disappear from the display and the green in use light will stop flashing on the base station.
