My washing machine is over filling?

My washing machine is overfilling and then flooding. Where is the water level control valve / thing - I am wondering if it has become disconnected - how do I check?

If its a hotpoint, its usually visible with the lid off. Its a round plastic component about 1.5" across with several wires coming from it. There should be a plastic tube coming from this to the drum which activates the pressure. It could need replacing, I played with mine but it was useless. I adjusted the screws on the new one to allow more water for washing. Now it actually washes properly.
