This is just a guess, because it is very hard to understand from your explanation what you have done, I suspect there are steps that you haven't told us, because you think we would know.
I believe that you may have introduced a virus from your harddrive to the laptop. The laptop would look at the harddrive as an internal device and therefore possibly not check for virus.
Your only action if I am correct, is to reboot the machine using a virus checker on a repair disk. In this way the virus is not enabled at boot up and you can set the virus checker to search and destroy, because the virus will not have had the opportunity to enable its stealth capabilities. To do this on a laptop, you need to look at the original user instructions so that you can enable booting from the CD drive as I'm guessing there won't be a floppy drive available, those days have all but gone.
