ford escort n reg running on when stopping?

i have an old but very tidy ford escort on an n plate and when pulling up at traffic lights or a junction the engine runs on ... acn anyone explain why this is please.... also it does seem top be running a bit lumpy just lately so not sure if this is related ?

Check for splits or leaks in the air trunking between the air filter and the throttle body.

The accelerator cable could be old and dry. Is it smooth in operation. If not lubricate it, or replace it with a new cable.
