it sounds like the thermo coupling has gone.this shuts off the gas if the pilot light or flame goes out. this is to prevent gas going into the fire and gassing you. i dont think it is ajob u should do yourself(rules and regs etc) but a gas fitter would not charge that much as the part only costs a couple of pounds and it takes about half an hour to do.
