As a rule of thumb it should be little over your arms lenght, make sure the rope is the correct diameter( it should not fit too tight in the pulley, or be too small and double up in the pulley)once fitted , at full cord length you should still be able to turn the pulley at least half a turn, this will ensure you do not coil bind the spring as this will pull the ends off the spring. Always use good quaility starter cord, Make sure the ferrel in the starter housing has no sharp edges which could start the cord to fray.
