My sewing machine won't hold a stitch?

I replaced the bobbin and needle on my Kenmore (model 1278180). It seems to be an issue with the bobbin thread. I can't get the needle to pick it up, so I thread it manually, and then it won't hold stitches. I did at one point get it to work for a few seconds and then it all bunched up. Now it's back to not holding a stitch. Is this a tension issue or what? Looking at it, I don't see how the needle *would* pick up the bobbin thread the first time. The needle doesn't go in there far, and neither does the top thread.

Hi, make sure you are using the correct needle for your sewing machine. If you have verified that you are using the correct needle then your timing might be off. The needle only has to go in far enough so the hook can catch the thread. You can visually inspect that by removing the needle plate. If the hook does not revolve then a gear may be broken but you would have to check and see what happens between the hook and the needle.
