repairing my mother-in law's Staples Model SPL-710SH crosscut shredder?

my mother-in law's Staples Model SPL-710SH crosscut shredder turns on and runs when the "on" switch is pushed. when the sensors "see" the paper, the shredder turns off. also, there is no manual. what function does the "on-off" switch on the lower side of the shredder do?
thanks

1. (a) Shredder works upside down (b) but not when in place. the motor runs and shredder turns when (a) but not when (b).

2. A small tab on the bottom is broken. it is spring loaded and covered with a tab with 4 screws. It does not seem do do anything. Where can I get I get a replacement part?

3. A switch is located on the bottom on the same side but about 10" from the broken switch. (a) works when the switch is depressed and held while turning on the shredder to run fwd & rev.

4. There is an on off slide switch on the bottom. What is this for?

I had the exact same problem. When first turned on it would just run. Then when putting a piece of paper in it would shut off.

It turned out that the sensor lights were blocked by a tiny scrap of paper in the cd shredder. So once that was removed it works fine. Took me a while to figure that one out.

I had the same problem with the SPL-710SH shredder from Staples. I didn't have a schematic but figured it out my own. I found the LED's that provide the light source for the paper/CD photo diodes sensors to be defective. I replaced both with LEDs from Radio Shack (part # 276-0014 - approx $1.99) . Now it works perfectly.
