try cleaning the laser lens...you can use a cleaning disc or open the unit and gently wipe the lens with a Q-tip that's been dipped in alcohol. try to find some 90 percent pure alcohol at the drug store.
there's a cover over the laser lens so you'll have to look underneath to see it.
I went to parts store and there are no parts for the dvd 224 model, and if you could buy a replacement laser lens assembly I doubt it would be worth it to fix it.
