ford escort van faulty light problems!!?

my K reg escort van is randomly switching between main beam and side lights when switched on. It only happens for a few minutes then switches back to main beam.
Any ideas??

faulty relay, or poor connections on the power supply to the headlamp relay , causing the coil contacts to unlatch till the coil is re-energized again
