what do i check for?

got a vw golf thats just started overheating after bout 8miles. its a 16v 1.4L engine a fairly new engine and a first time problem. Its an R reg.

is there enough coolant in the expansion tank.the radiator may be blocked(flush out rad with hose).air lock in coolant system. engine timing out.faulty thermostat. this is roughly the process i use.
