Use microwave without waveguard?

Can I use my microwave oven without a waveguard whilst I obtain a new one (have just ordered one online)? Only just noticed bits of the old one and saw that it wasn't there!

This is a comment not an answer. Am in same position as you and asked Sharp (the manufacturer of ten year old oven). Their reply was do not use it as it poses a health risk. 'The wave guard is there for your protection.'
Now I am concerned never heard anything like this before!
Have replaced guards four times in ten years. Hopefully this was enough.
