i have a somewhat old sony triniton unit. the image is still great. however, it is in black and white at one point when i would turn the TV on it would be color but aftert a couple of minutes it would jump to black and white. is there anything i can do from home to fix it.

Old Sony TV's suffer terribly from multiple dry soldered joints.
If it's soldering it should be an inexpensive repair. Ask for an estimate.

As karkera says, you should not attempt repair unless qualified to do so.

if you arent a service technician.. please do not open and do anything.. inside thereis high voltage of the order of KV near the EHT.,, but if you are atechie then i would suggest that you get the service diagram and check out the color procesing section... as your problems are after some time,, some capcitors (electrolytic) may be bad... you need to check them.. or if you luck is bad then the IC may be bad...
