The suction is barely there and the performance indicator light won't go off. We tried cleaning out the hose but can't find anything in it. The bag is new.

Check the filters. Something is restricting the air flow. Either the small filter inside the bag area or possibly the exit filter located where you feel the air exiting from the vacuum. To test, remove 1 or both of these filters and see if vacuum works well, if so replace filter(s) before operating vacuum as they are very important.
