approx. cost Crank shaft vauxhall corsa?

I have an 05 reg Vauxhall Corsa auto/man and the warning light came on for exhaust emission but did not flash. I took it to nearest garage, they rang late tonight to say it is the crank shaft. Could someone give me a rough idea how much parts and labour are likely to be. Also is there anyway I can be sure this is the problem.
I have had the car from new and it has low mileage, and has been regularly serviced. However, now everything seems to be going wrong. The other mechanical warning light keeps going on and off but various tests fail to show the fault, even though I tell them that the light comes on when the car tries to go up to third gear and fails to do so. If you try to use the gears rather than the automatic mode you find some days you can and some days you can't! All of these faults are at the car's whim as after a very cold spell it drove perfectly without any lights coming on for several days!!!
This latest crank shaft problem means I really want to get the car fixed and change it, but I am on a very limited budget now so cannot afford to be conned by a garage.I still need someone to solve the other problem. They think old ladies are push overs!

you say a warning light come on indicating exhaust emissions, sounds like a faulty sensor/ECU which may be cheap and simple to fix. as for a new crank this is most unlikely, did the garage say if it was a crank shaft sensor? i would most certainly seek advice and get a SECOND opinion from a respectable garage before you commit yourself. good luck

Sams right but are you sure they said Crank Shaft and not Crank Shaft sensor,I doubt it is the crank shaft as the engine would be making a noise like a tank rumbling down the street, ask them again and listen carefully, they should also have told you the approximate cost of repair,if not go somewhere else,it will cost you nothing to get a second opinion.

PFF forget about geting a new crank shaft, they have to strip the whole engine down. wich will cost abit, you might aswell buy a new engine, because the amount you spend on the crankshaft, you could easily buy a new engine
