What is a DVD region ?

I have been reading all the questions in hope of fixing my POrtable Orbit DVD Player's problem. It starts fine, plays the previews and when it get's to the actual movie it dosen't stop spinning but nothing shows, no pic no sound???

Would this Region thing that I have been reading about be the cause ?

Nope nothing to do with it. Sounds a bizzare fault - if you have told us everything.

Regions are used by the movie companies to restrict when and where movies are issued. Region One (USA) DVDs won't play on a Region two (Europe) machine and vice versa. One can get multi-region machines that will play anything.
