If you install AVG or any other good AV, it can scan your e-mails and attachments as they are been downloaded. It will automaticaly quaranteene infected attachments.
In Thunderbird, open Tools|Options...
Security section, Antivirus tab. Check the check box.
Undesirable tab: Check the first and last checkboxes. Leave the middle one unchecked to make it easier to catch eventual false positives.
Whenever you get some dubious messages or SPAM, click the "Undesirable" button instead of just deleting it. This will teach the spam filter what you concidere unaceptable messages. The filtering will get much beter over time: Less misses and less false positives.
But, you must remember that the weakest link is usualy the person in front of the computer and that NO security solution can ever be 100% effecient.
If you have peoples in your house that are to trusting, have them log in as reduced right users or even as "guess". That way, if they get some nasty files, the possible dammage will be confined and easy to fix.
The good thing with a guess account is that they can ONLY launch the applications that you permit them to launch.
Make sure that your acount is protected by a good password.
Make sure that the administrative acount have an even beter pasword.
