Electrolux er7926 fridge/freezer not working?

Last night my f/f stoped working and food was soft. switched it off all day and come home from work and switched it back on....still not working. After looking on forums could be the defrost stat or stat but not sure which. Can i bypass these to locate fault as dont want to pay for engineer if possible. The defrost timer was changed four years ago and the f/f/ is six years old. Need this fridge back a.s.a.p. as the baby's milk is getting warm!!! Any help much appriciated, Steve

Dont know if this has anything to do with it but for the last few months the f/f has been making some large "cracking sounds" every couple of hours. If standing next to f/f it scared the s**t out of me. Is this a sign of the f/f on its way out?

There is no thermostat in the fridge on the right as you say. I have unscrewed the "max air flow cover" at the back to find the end of the thermostat, but how do I test the stat or bypass it to get the compressor to to work to prove this really is the issue before spending £20 plus on a new one. I can get to the thermostat control by removing the lid and sliding forward. There are three terminals and various wires coming in and out. I have looked for wiring diagram on net with no Joy. Please help. Cheers Steve

there is a thermostat in the fridge on the right as you look in.if the light comes on but the compressor doesn't run then this is the likely problem.you have to remove the thermostat plastic housing by removing the mounting screws and then pulling it towards the front to gain access to the thermostat.the bit on the back with max airflow also has to be removed to allow the new thermostat file to be fitted.
