How do I fix a broken selector knob on washer?

Whirlpool Duet Sport HT Model: WFW8500SR00
My wash selector knob is broken. I glued the crack in the knob's plastic stem. I placed the knob back on the metal thread on the machine, and it doesn't stay on nor do it make any wash selection. It just spins. How can I fix this?
