My 1980 JCB 3cx is loosing transmission fluid & drive. ?

I fill up the transmission fluid but then after a couple of hours it starts to loose drive (forward first). When I then check the dipstick it is not registering any fluid. As soon as I fill it back up the drive comes back.

Has anyone any obvious ideas where I could be loosing the fluid? Does the hydra clamp have anything to do with this?

Thanks for your help

If the 'cups' have blown out of the engine block (they're actually called core plugs) then I would imagine the cooling system is pressurising. Possible cause cyl head gasket, or cracked cyl head. You say you can see oil at the head, so this confirms head gasket gone. This pressure in the cooling system maybe what has caused the cracked transmission oil cooler. Petrol and matches !! Thanks for that.

I've been told its probably loosing it through the transmission oil cooler in front of the radiator.

I think this is leeking but now have a bigger problem in that today it overheated.

I turned it straight off left it for a few hours and engine still turns over on key but it has blown out 3 "cups"? from side of engine. (i believe water runs behind these?

I believe these type of cups (about 1" diameter) simply knock in. Found all 3 (one had a pin prick in it hence loosing water) and it look like old ones have been simply siliconed in place by the previous owner?

It also looks like its blown some oil from head gasket although still registering plenty on dip stick.

Engine still turns over but I only tried it for a second as I dont want to start it until I get and put the new "cup" things in and fill it back up with water.

Does anyone know what they call these "Cup" things and how to fit them.

Also do you think head gasket will have blown?

Thanks for your help.

The obvious answer is the oil is being lost onto the ground! If you are pouring it in it is going somewhere innit? You are losing drive because of the lack of oil. And no it is nowt to do with the hydraclamps as that is hydraulic oil, on an unconnected circuit. Also you will kill the clutch plates (bend them with heat) if you run short of oil
