This problem is to do with the laser. I'll explain. The laser in a DVD player has TWO lasers with in it. One laser picks up DVD, the other CD's etc.
In your case, the DVD laser has failed so that it only recognises audio CD/CD-mp3s.
It will cost a fair bit to have a new laser installed, it may be a good idea to get a new machine (will work out cheaper in the long run).
