how can i fix gear problem on my ford transit ?

ford transit 280 swb cant get 2nd 4th or reverse gears. sometimes very stiff to select and just crunches but wont go in gear

Gear selector CABLE. A very very common fault. Very very shit design, but then it's a Ford... If it's causing a problem it can be adjusted but it's not woth it, you're gonna need a new cable, might as well get it done. Does cost 100 quid which IMHO is a tad steep for what it is but then it is what it is, in'it. It's such a easy DIY fix I just got under the van and done it without having a clue how to actually do it. Man I'm good, and not just with a spanner, know what I mean...

Sounds like the gear selector on top of the gear box is sized this is a common problem on transits.The selector is bolted on to the gear box with 5 or 6 bolts you will have to remove the link cables as well to remove these squeeze the two clips on top of the cable ball joints and pull upwards. once removed take out the reverse light switch and inside you will see a bush thats probably sizid to shaft stopping the selector from moving up and down.
