While taping video to dvd the machine stopped after an hour displaying a message - U61 - unable to complete due to scratch on dvd, which was brand new.
After about an hour it appeared to go back to normal but we didn't use the dvd facility till a week later.
It now won't play dvds at all and says it cannot read them.
Any ideas? I can't find anything in the manual.

The issue probably relates to a faulty MPEG board.This can be replaced. I have the same problem with same model. Called Panasonic cust. services they pointed me towards nearest approved repair shop and told me they (Panasonic) will consider contributing towards cost of repair.
