Clay garden?

I have a lawned garden and in the winter it is water logged but in the summer its rock hard, the reason being it's clay underneath.Any ideas how to solve this other than dig 10 feet down.I want to lay new turf but I would be wasting my time.

try airateing the lawn with a garden fork, then adding sand. it will take a few seasons of doing this (in early spring and autum) but it will eventually break up the particles of clay. i have done this myself!
