How do I fix a leaking hot water heater?

How do I repair a leaking hot water heater? It's a slow leak, I think it is anyway. The carpet in front of it starting to get wet.

You don't fix it, you have it replaced. Internal corrosion probably caused a hole, and immediate replacement is the solution. Pay the 500 some odd bucks, or face possible water/fire damage.
