cant start my 1.3 petrol escort van?

my 1.3 petrol escort van won't start, it happened all of a sudden. It sounds like its trying to start but the noise is higher pitched than usuall. please can any1 help me? I've tested the battery and the spark plugs and leads but i'm not a machanic so am stuck.

it sounds like your timing belt may have broken [if its belt and not chain] take oil filler cap off and whilst someone turns key see if there is any movement on rockers or camshaft.
