WD40 worked for me too. However, there was no need (in my case anyway) to unscrew the plastic box even. I simply unclipped the little plastic box from the underside of the flush button, and squirted a generous glug of WD40 into the box through the hole that the flush plunger pokes into. I then used a pencil to poke down the same hole and wiggle the small blue lever until it happily sprung back cleanly again. This may save the next person a even more work. No tools required whatsoever! (except the lubricant).

I've had the same problem but I wasn't sure if it was the WD40 or whether the spring in the grey box behind the push button was the culprit. After unscrewing the two philips screws on the grey box and opening it up the insides came apart which make me wonder if the spring had unhooked itself from the white piece.

I have just looked up via the net on how to mix said loo and I used the WD40 and its fixed :) That will please my hubby . Many thanks

Ray is quite right ,the WD40 does work .Although on my flush the smaller level indicator on the side of the unit was the trouble as it was sticking and preventing the plunger from going down far enough, you can ensure it is operating ok by making sure the that the bottom of the plunger is down a good 1 ins from the unit casing, if not it means the plunger is still sticking and the water will still run thru it into the toilet pan,so just make sure its 1 ins .
The direct replacement for the unit if you decide to change it is the "Kayla DVA 0100" ,at the moment its about £15 on e-bay, or the "Fluidmaster 550073 or Fluidmaster Pro 05502.
My unit was difficult to get out of the cistern, but when i gave it a really hard twist ,which was maybe a bit more than a 1/4 turn it popped out easier, its easy peasy to get it back into its cradle that stays in the cistern.

Just to let you all know. It's 2014 and the problem still occurs and WD 40 still works, but just make sure you have a good look at the layout of the little plastic box before you take it apart!

Ray, July 2014
I had the same problem. WD40 also worked for me. Many thanks for the great advice.

perfect. worked wonderful

Further, if this doesnt solve your problem, at the other end of the cable is the actual valve mechanism. There is a spring that returns the cable to normal fill position and hence lets the valve shut off delivery to the bowl. This spring can rot and get very rusty etc.

Solution: Take out the valve (suggest water off) by twisting 1/4 turn. Pop lid off of valve, small flat screw driver on 4 little lug type things, and you will see the spring/cable/lever mechanism. The spring and cable bit comes out on a plastic part of the valve body. Disconnect cable and replace spring with one from an old disassembled pen! Yep, a pen spring fits just right! This will be much easier if you have disconnected the push button end of the cable too so you have plenty of slack. Obviously a stainless steel one would be ideal, but...

Be sure you note disassembly positions so its easy to get back together, bit of oil (3 in 1 is better than WD in my opinion) down this end of cable... bingo.

Happy flushing.

Thanks - worked for me

My MACDEE WRAS DVA0200 flushing system would not
shut off after flushing. I tried the trick of adding soldering wire to the shut-off valve, plus lubricating the cable. I'm amazed - it works!
I'm FLUSHED with success!
Must go now, I need to go!
Thanks to everyone.

Thanks people - just what was needed.

The WD40 worked perfectly, I was about to give up and get a plumber out or even replace the toilet!! Thanks for the great advice!

Cheers guys, WD40 worked a treat. £20 saved

Joshua R, December 2011
Top marks to whoever came up with the wd40 solution, it worked for me too. The wife has even hinted that we might partake in some extra curricular activities tonight, thanks to me saving a plumbers bill.

Mr Macdee, November 2011
Worked for me too - just about to spend £19 on a replacement and then - 1 last look and few squirts of WD40 Fixed! Top Banana - I love the internet

Cygnus NF, November 2011

Tony H, November 2011
Had the same problem and have just fixed it with the WD40 trick.

Paul B, October 2011
I had this problem with a DVA 0200, and spent hours disassembling and fiddling. Then I found this forum!
The WD40 is the magic answer.
You can save on the squirting a bit by opening the little plastic box (one small Philips screw and a bit of levering) and getting at the cable directly, but before you open it look carefully at how much of the cable outer is showing. It can be put back in several positions, which allows you to adjust how tight the cable is when the button is pushed.

Thanks to everyone on this. WD40 squirted down the cable sheath worked for me too. A bit of advice from me too. Don't take any wooden top or decor lid off the cistern set up like I did! This can all be done from the front. If I had to do it again I would:
1 - Unclip the front decor panel which holds the push button that you normally press to flush.
2 - Disconnect the plastic box immediately behind it by pulling the bright blue clip.
3 - Unscrew the single crosshead screw that secures the unit together
4 - Dismantle so you can get to the top end of the cable protruding from the sheath. At this point you may like to gently push the cable back down the sheath in order to stop the continual flushing. You will feel some resistance so do it carefully without bending the cable.
5 - Then rather awkwardly get some WD40 down the sheath. Hold the sheath up to allow it to flow downwards to the bottom. Tease the cable in and out a few times just an inch or so to help release the ceased mechansim.
6 - That's about it. Reassemble and feel virtuous that you have saved a plumber's call out charge to do the same thing!
7 - I would like to have got down into the bottom assembly and taken it all apart but I couldn't work out how to do it but that would be a plan B for anyone who still can't get the thing to work with WD40.

Paul Cheall, July 2011
Thank you very much Paul66 - I did not know how to get the cistern button off from the cable to replace the top until I read your reply :)

AliGee61, July 2011
can confirm the same fix for me worked a treat I simply applied wd 40 into the cable mechanism by releasing the blue clip. Many thaks

TonyP, June 2011
Brilliant easy when you know how. I dismantled the white plastic box sprayed and pulled the cable, then put the box back together then sprayed lots into it. Thanks!

Ballabrigg, April 2011
Just tried Magic Malc's WD40 trick and it has worked perfectly. Many thanks.

Ken S, January 2011
just had the exact same thing, kept taking the flush unit out, put it back in and it worked, just once tho then back to square one, lubing the plunger with WD40 works.

The plastic box is released from the lid by pressing the blue clip at the end near the thread, it slides across a bit and releases

Paul66, October 2010
I'm so glad someone else has the same problem, can I ask how do you release the plastic box from the lid ?

Stephanie, August 2010
i managed to do an easy fix on this i applied a bit of wd40 if you feel at the very base where plunger comes down if you fiddle with the piston untill it goes into the hold position you can feel the piston i also added a little more weight to the piston using a stone from the garden so that it will return more willingly!

Tom, August 2010
Yes. The WD40 trick worked for me too.

Robert, August 2010
Just had your problem, good news, it is simple and not costly. When you push the button to flush, it operates a little leaver inside the small plastic box on the end of the cable attached to the systen lid. So release the plastic box from the lid. the little leaver will probably be stuck in the down position, if so poke in to lift it back up, this will let the valve reset and the systen should fill up. Now use a pencil or something and push the little leaver back down, this should flush the toilet and give you an idea how it works. At this point all i did was squirt in plenty of WD40 and keep activating the little leaver with a pencil untill the cable is freed by the WD40. When you have it free clip it back onto the cysten. HEY PRESTO! Hope it works for you, let me know.

Magic Malc, July 2010
then the flush valve is not shutting or the seal on the bottom has failed.
