I have just had a problem with connecting my laptop to my lcd/plasma tv too, it worked with a VGA cable but the cable shaped inside and only showed a green pic I bought a new one but it did't pick up the laptop at all ?
on closer inspection my old one had a pin missing but the new one did't i took a risk and pulled the same one out and it worked ,
As you look at the VGA cable with the narrow side to the top it was the second from left on the center row of pins im not sure what this one is but it might work for you too
