Peugeot 207 1.6 Automatic - Gearbox Fault?

Hello,

When I am driving my Peugeot 207 1.6 Automatic (2008 plate) and put my foot down, it seems like it struggles between two gears and the car slightly jerks - Then you get an error message on display "info - gear box fault" If I switch car off and then back on again, the error message disappears and when driving car everything seems normal. Does anyone know what the cause is and how to fix it?

Thanks

Hi there
I have been experiencing the same problems with my car too..
1st drive of the day like clockwork..
Driving along at 50mph and then the car clunk's and seems to drop a gear and the car beeps and on the stereo screen it shows " gearbox faulty" and next to the "D " a snowflake symbol appears with the s mode symbol too.. but it then drives really sluggish.. however if you stop and turn the car off and back on again it runs like there is nothing wrong!!

I have been in and out the garage 4 times..frustrating!! They replaced the multi function switch..but didn't work..and they had it on the diagnostic machine 2 more times after fitting the switch and same fault kept appearing..took it in again this week and all they did was adjust this so called switch they had fitted 2 weeks ago..and low and behold its still not fixed..I'm honestly at my witts end!!
I notice a lot of people seem to be having success with the oil pressure solenoid valve.. would you advise that this would perhaps cure mine?

Vicky, April 2022
I had the exact same problem. We managed to resolve it by changing the gear oil and replacing the oil pressure solenoid valve. All good with the car so far :)

Gabriel, October 2020
Basically, and based on what i have read in this thread and other forums, people found the solution to be :

replacing the flywheel
replacing the multi connector of the gear
changing gear oil
replacing the transmission solenoid
replacing the regulator valve.

what do you guys think ?

Hi if the oil counter has been reset and the problem is still happening wat could the problem be

David norris, September 2017
At about 35k auto box oil counter needs reset to say 500 from 35k. Easily done with plug in at the right automatic centre, assuming all else is good. Cheap fix might woork for you ?

my 207 auto holds the gears too long and when does change it changes slow like how a slipping clutch is on a manual gearbox. Any ideas please?

Gav, September 2016
If I'm honest, I wouldn't *touch* the Peugeot Tiptronic auto - it's too fragile. I've got the 208 with the EAT gearbox, and it's a lot more robust - and a nicer gear change.

peugeot 207cc auto gearbox . clunking noise and judder . went to my local independent gearbox garage . at 4pm yeaterday , today at 12 noon the car was fixed for £350 . valve body was loose and warped . unit cleaned tightened ans also skimmed .

Hi all
I'm looking to purchase a 2011 207 sportium auto for my wife. It has done 65000 klms. She has previously owned a 1999 306 auto, and that has had a problem with the auto. After reading all these comments, not sure if I should buy one. I love these cars, they look great, and have a lot of options. Being a 2011 model, hoping Peugeot have solved most of these issues. What do you guys think?

Harry, April 2016
I thought the solenoids would solve the problems... Nope. The dread "Clunk / Thud" came back, along with the message "Gearbox Error"

Not impressed with the gearbox on this car - so much so that I have now sold it, and bought a 208 auto - which has a totally different gearbox"

Kaz, November 2015
i had the same problem with my 207 2009 and they
have fitted a valve body and it seems to have done the job

darren, November 2015
This is Peugeot Strategy to milk the customer. Cheap to buy expensive to maintain.

Good luck

check the sensors should be covered by warranty. in first 3 years i have had 3 faulty sensors all with similar effects to what is written here

wendy, August 2015
pressure regulator valves is a very common fault on the Peugeot transmission we are repairing on average 2 a week turning engine off then on again is only like rebooting your computer at home it does not cure the problem.

Paul at Selector Gearbox Centre Ltd (Liverpool), May 2015
I got the same issue, car is 57 plate, got it from new, I had the massage about Gearbox faulty while under warranty and it start doing again a few months back, I was told its Valves that need to be changed, costing £470

did any one contact Peugeot about it?

I have an old peogeot206. Alarm sound which I recorded that gappens after 30 miles if driving has been described by garages as gear box warning sound(no dasboard lughts flash). Had it checked by garages but cant find any problems. Its an x reg. Ive had loads of work done on my car, suspension, wheel bearings, carberetta, new exhaust. Can anyone help xx

estelle, November 2014
57 plate 207 sw. Mine had the same fault. took it to a main dealer and got a diagnostic check. Fault was the gearbox solenoid. Just had it fixed for under £500 quid. Diagnostic fee was refunded. Good service (they even washed the car for me)

I have 207 cc 2007 model ,I had (gearbox system failure )displayed on my car screen for few times at the same time the car slow &jerk,I had the gearbox checked and been told that the solenoid needs to be repaired!!!

Update:
I decided to visit an independent automatic gearbox specialist who put a fault code reader into my car and found the faulty part to be a multi-function switch. He replaced this for me and reset the car's computer. This worked out to be relatively inexpensive next to the £1050+ quoted previously. Touch wood (tap, tap) the car's been absolutely fine since. I hope this was the problem and nothing else.

G-3000, March 2014
My 2010 Peugeot 207 SW Sport 1.6L has the automatic gearbox. I have 46,000 miles on the clock.
I sometimes get the error message on the display with a bleep sound, then it goes. Then I get the warning triangle light up, the snowflake symbol & sports mode "s" appear by the D symbol. These only go out if I switch the engine off. The car drives normal though.
I took it to my local Peugeot dealer for a diagnostic and I was told it's a gearbox pressure regulation fault and that a new hydraulic block is required, totaling just over £1050. Then once that's done I need a download for the gearbox & engine ECU.

Hi guys, mine is cc 2009, tiptronic. I had the same problem after the second year, when the car was still covered by the warranty. I took it to the garage and they updated the software. After that, for two years this problem disappeared. Unfortunately, it poped-up again now, when tha car is more then 4 years old (no more warranty) and is 27,000km. I just wonder if this could be again the software or a solenoid (as I read some of the posts here). Anyway, it is very dissapointing to see that so many people experience the same issue. Honestly, I will never buy Peugeot again. Anyway, i will take it to the dealership and let you know..

Hello All,

I recently bought my wife a Peugeot 1.6 207 VTI Auto '08 5 door Hatch, with 89k on the clock as her first ever car.

Bought the Haynes car repair manual and it states that the gearbox oil filler plug is on top of the gearbox (and it is, but it requires a "square drive" socket and a very long extension bar to undo it) and going by the manual can be easily accessed by pulling half your car apart.

Had a good look and if you undo one 10mm bolt off the rocker cover that holds that middle part of the air cleaner tube, you can unclip it off the front, lift it upwards and to your right, then lift it out. Go slow as it's sort of on a thread. There is one other small pipe at the back that has to also be unclipped off that centre tube.
Easy access, but if you intend to undo that top oil filler plug, then make sure you clean around it first before undoing it.
To fill it i bought a small 1 litre spring loaded utility pump from the speed shop, and 3 ft extra tubing.

If you only want to check the oil level, then the check oil level plug is, going by the manual, a big two part nut underneath, the center nut being the level check, the big being the drain.

Well mine is not like that at all, mine is again a square drive plug, and that is how you check the oil level, (trickles, all good) but on mine to drain the oil i found a plastic insert up inside the square drive thread, and an "Allen" key will undo that easily to drain the rest of the oil.

Procedure is, you must have the gearbox at operating temperature first, park the car on a level surface (important), and DON'T TURN THE ENGINE OFF, get under the car along with your tools and oil spill tray, and undo carefully either the small center nut or square drive plug, and have your spill tray under it.

That's how you check the gearbox oil level, and if a little bit trickles out and looks clean and does not smell burnt, do the bolt up and forget about it as it's fine. Turn the engine off, be happy, don't worry.

If you need or want to change the oil, leave the drip tray in place, and turn the engine off. About 800ml of oil will come out, and when that stops, get back under the car and undo that outer nut or center insert plug (or wait a long time till the oil cools preferably) and that drains the rest of the oil, and let it drip for at least half an hour.

But if you are only checking oil level and nothing comes out, you need to buy a specific grade fully synthetic gearbox oil. Price of Peugeot oil in Australia is $400 for 5 litres.

I researched it and used a oil called Gulf Western Syntrans multi functional ATF, which exceeds specs at less than half the price.
The change in gearbox attitude was immediate, but it still grabbed a little bit, so i ran it around for a few days.

My issue was that it grabbed in first, and was slippy between second and third gear.

Now be aware that the gearbox holds all up about 5 litres, but you will only be able to at best drain about three litres, the other two being in the torque converter, and you still have two litres of fresh expensive oil left over that you will probably never use, but i had plans for that, so i bought another product called LUCAS Transmission fix which claims that it stops leaks and hard shifting, and it did, but ONLY use HALF of that 700 ml bottle.

In a week, i then dropped 2.5 litres of semi polluted oil (3 litres clean, 2 litres old and dirty) and put my remaining fresh oil in along with the Lucas product, and topped it with the oil i had just taken out. Happy to report more improvement.

For your information, if you place the new oil container into a bucket of boiling water for ten minutes, it warms that oil and it makes it much easier to pump in.

Kashka, the Snowflake & Sport S showed on my display when my car was throwing a hissy fit, and showing that it was a gearbox error, so it sounds like your car is doing the same as mine did.

Karen - I have a horrible feeling that the gearbox on the 207 is a "sealed unit" meaning that you can't top the transmission fluid up. The only reason I suspect this, is because there is no dipstick for the gearbox, unlike the 206 which did have one.

Kaz, July 2013
Mine does exactly the same thing (2007 plate) only addition is that mine also shows (as well as gearbox fault) that I am driving in snow/sports mode at same time. My car is no longer under warranty but if so many of us are having the same problem is this not a design fault that we can do something about?

Kashka, July 2013
Hi, I have a 55 plate SE. It does the same as what every one has been saying about their 2007 upward models. I find that as one other has wrote on here if you start the car and let it run a little before putting into gear it doesn't seem to do it. And when it does it always happens on the same stretch of road 10 minutes from leaving home. Does any one know where the automatic transmission fluid goes as I can't find it, or can't this be topped up. Some one told me I could try the stop slip fluid in the gear box as this might help and only costs £20. Really can't afford some of the prices some of you have been quoted.

Karen, July 2013
Loren, I'd take the car back to the dealer, as the solenoid & SW update *should* have sorted the problem (speaking from experience). If the dealer can't (or won't) help, contact Peugeot Customer Services - they're really helpful.

Kaz, February 2013
I am having similar problem on my 2009 plate 207, done 37800Kms, gives gear box faulty error, going to call Peugeot sevice, from the description looks like the Solenoid will have to replaced.

Rens, January 2013
Yep, have the same probs.
Gear change between 1st and 2nd clunks.
The problem is especially evident when driving in peak hour stop/start traffic at low revs.
Seems to not be sure whether it should or shouldnt go up a gear?
Just had valves/solenoids changed at Trivett Parramatt and SW updated $1700. Still not resolved.

Loren_K, January 2013
Steve, if you're on good terms with the local Pug garage, I would suggest asking them to have a look at the CPU memory, as this should (in theory) tell them where they need to look, as this does sound like the problem my car had - throwing hissy fits / gearbox errors the whole time...

Kaz, December 2012
Back in September I had the software updated. All was well but the snatching problem as I pull away is back, along with "Gear Box Faulty" message.

Steve, December 2012
hi i have a 207 07 plate 34000 on clock and i have had it 6weeks and in the last 2weeks mine had done the same and seems to squeel a bit untill i put my foot on the brake.i bought mine on finance nightmare warranty doesnt cover gearbox taking it in for diagnostics this week

oikey, December 2012
I suggest emailing peugeot about this problem as its a common fault with the auto box on these model, let them know so they can sort it and realise its very common!
Email peugeot direct on there website will help!

Skan, December 2012
Hi peeps,

All sorted - I needed a solenoid replacement and a software update, and the car? Well, put it like this - it's smooth. Apparently, if I'd left it, it would have caused major damage to the gearbox (as in new / recon gearbox required!)

Kaz, November 2012
Hi peeps,

I've just had the news on the car. It's the valves / solenoids in the gearbox. Total bill will be £636.60, but they can put a brake switch in as a temporary repair for the car.

The dealership will need the car all day to sort the solenoids as this is classed as a *major* repair. So, whilst the brake switch won't cure the car, it will make things slightly easier until I get the main issue sorted out.

Kaz, October 2012
Hi peeps,

Further update on the car (my 07 Sport Auto) - it's back in the dealership as I type this, with the engineer running diagnostics on the car. He thinks is the valves in the gearbox (an uncommon fault apparently) and they will price this up with the necessary software update for me. I'll keep you in the loop as to the verdict...

Kaz, October 2012
Not good news peeps - I've taken my car (a 2007 Sport Auto) into my dealer, and they think it may be the Solenoids in the gear box. I've got to take in back in two weeks time, so I'll keep you all informed on the outcome, so unfortunately for me, a software update isn't the cure. I'll post more as I get the information....

Kaz, September 2012
Solved it!!!!!!
Update:
Took it into Peugeot. Had a software update (apparently pre 2009 most need it) and not had one single judder from gear changes since. engine runs better aswell. S mode has more vavavoom too!!

Steve, September 2012
Yep folks - Me too! (It's a CC version but same POrsche Tiptronic Gear system)If I let the engine run in the mornings until the Revs have come below 800 (Automatic choke needs to calm down to reduce revs), it seems to run OK and I get smooth gear changes. If I dont do this I get the hard jerks and the warning message. Again, it clears if I switch on/off.

Steve, July 2012
i have the same problem its like you talk about my car they told me the Ger sensors need to clean or change will take to mica-nice soon

Halid, May 2012
Glad it's not just me that has this issue! I have a 2007 plate 207 has the same problem - mainly when the car is cold, and I have the climate control running...

Has there been any news on this? My local dealer doesn't seem to want to know!

Karen, November 2011
same problem with my car bought in 2010. I wonder how many more have this problem. Have you heard from the company Kostas?

rg, October 2011
Have the same problem for my 2009 car. It is in the dealer's for the time being. The guy told me he contacted peugeot in France and he's gonna keep me informed.

Kostas, March 2011
my 207 1.6 auto 2007 does the same thing did u manage to find out the problem?

., November 2010
Our car is same year and same model and we are having exactly the same auto g'box problem with the same symptoms you describe.
Our car has only 26000 kays.

Dyah S, July 2010
It is booked into the dealers but I like to know these things before the car goes in... Thanks

Sarah, April 2010
Surely the car is still under warranty. Why not get the dealer to sort it out for you?
