keep getting message channel unavailable?

my sky grundig digibox is doing my head in.Every time i decide to change channels i get the message channel unavailable.I unplug it for two mins then when i turn it back on it's ok for a short while then it does it again. Also when i select box office and look for films it gives the message no channels of this type.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like your box is toast I'm afraid. Forcing a software update when you have a signal problem is a BAD idea. Suggest a call to Sky or buy a new box on an auction site. There are always loads of them going cheap.

You can find a description of the fault and the affected boxes on www.satcure.co.uk. Its a matter of changing ALL the capacitors on the PSU board.

Otherwise, as a last ditch attempt to fix it yourself before you part with cash - you could try a forced software download. It may fix any possible software corruption.

1) Put TV on. Put Sky on.
2) Hold down the Back-Up Button on the main box.
3) While it's depressed - disconnect the 'mains' power completely. (BUT don't let go of the backup button yet!)
4) Wait 20-30 seconds, when all the front display lights will illuminate on the Sky box & a messgae will be displayed on TV.
5) Only then release the backup button.
6) Wait 10-15 mins for the download to complete.

Thanks Terry.
I'm pretty handy with a soldering iron myself,is the fault easy to spot?

I'm afraid that it could be your STB. Some of the Grundig boxes have a fault with the Power Supply board. I repaired mine because I don't have a Sky contract and I can fault find and solder. The latter is the more important skill in this case.) But you should be able to get Sky to swap it out for about £65 which is their standard service charge.
