First the coolant warning light on the dash came on, a few days later the ABS light came on and the speedo needle intermittently dropped to 0 then back to normal. Occasionally the power steering didn't work just after starting then was ok. Then for a couple of days the ignition (battery) warning light flickered on when driving then it stopped . Today the engine management warning light came on, I stopped the car and when I tried to start it again the battery was totally dead. Jump started it and limped home with no power steering or speedo, rev ctr etc. Any ideas anyone please?

I recently went through a simular prob with a cavalier on a L plate 94 if i didnt use every other day ?then not enough power to start.So looked it up on web inc here and found bad altenator shorted battery and resulted in a new battery and new alternator+new relay and heater plugs.the car is now 1000%and still giving 650-700 mls per tank(1.7td isuzu) ALSO by the sound of your prob the belts need replacing for alternator-and power assist if these are defective then i reccomend a timing belt replacement too.

sounds more like alternator jump start and check output should be 14 volts or more check wiring to alternator first and earths
