citroen dispatch - gear selection problem?

My 1999 citroen dispatch, has always had problems selecting reverse gear (light grinding as it engages) but today as I was selecting reverse the light grinding was followed by a clunk and the gear stick went all loose.
I had this happen on a vauxhall combo van years ago and the gear linkage had worked its way apart. When I inspected the van today, there appears to be to rods that run from the gear stick down to the gear selector on the gearbox, these were intact at both ends, so I am now not sure where to look next. Is it possible that these rods have broken inside their sleeve?

Sorted :-)
Got the part form the dealer, a bit of a fiddley job, but it's done now. So Happy days. The gear selection is much more positive than ever before, so I reckon the old cables must have been a little bit stretched prior to it snapping.

Thanks for your help Wickham

Right best I could find on Ebay was 80 quid + 10 quid postage for a set from a 5 year old van. Would take 3 - 4 business days to get to me.

Tried the scrap yards, none in :-(

Dealer price 110 quid inc vat new. Next day. A bit pricey but I think the best value. I cant be without my van coz I can't earn without it.

You could try scrappy or e bay, think both would be cheaper than main dealer

Gear linkage rod has broken, anyone know where I can get one from?

Neil, April 2010
Get someone to work gear lever, try back and forth in neutral, side to side, you should see one rod operate, then try into 1st and 2nd,other rod should operate,if either one is not moving it is broken-replace linkage,if both are moving problem is in your g/box,could be expensive, also sounds as if your clutch isnt clearing properly, good luck.
