I belive that a pin is caught up in the belt area as making lound rachet noise when switched on and belt is going round when beater bar is not going round does not make noise

I had the same problem and the problem was the beater bar had sheared(broken into 2 bits)so the belt was still going around but the beater wasn't,hope this helps
