How can I remove the agitator from a Kelvinator ECS model gw52-k?

The agitator contains a lot of old soap scum and needs cleaning out. It seems that to do that I need to remove the agitator. Question is how is that done?

With a special tool which is used to bend the plastic lugs sideways then you pull the agitator up. Very difficult without that tool.
