I have replaced my old standard lighting with Halogen fitting, connected the wires to new as were disconnected from old, i.e. from ceiling rose two Black to neutral, switched Black to live and earth to earth. The new light faintly glimmered into life and faded out and will not light back up. Have replaced my old fitting for moment and this works fine. Please help am confused.

I would temporarily put a plug on the end to test it.
I reckon you'll probably have to take it back to the shop.
