need help changing over my 2 gang light switch?

im replacing my two gang light switch, stupidly i didnt take note of how it was already wired...

I have a ceiling light and a set of wall lights.

the new light switch is same as the old..

L1 L2 C, L1 L2 C.

i have two black wires and two red wires and there was an additional peice of wire linking the two gangs together

So i have put the black wire into L1 the red in to C on the first gang/switch, now this always me to turn on and off the ceiling light.

So then i have connected the L1 to L1 and the second black wire in the second gang to L1

now this is letting me turn on the wall lights if the ceiling light is switch on.
the second red wire is left loose... i recall the set up previously being something like this but to me it seems wrong..

any answers on how to actually get the wall lights comming on and of by themself with out having to have the ceiling light on.

cheers
