there ia a fan and it comes on and goes off but I do not think it is working as it should.

Mine is exactly the same, but less than 2 years old. Yes fan in top of freezer section still works but area around fan is covered in ice; had to de-freeze recently as the fan was just scrapeing the ice and being noisier than usual!
