say cannot record on this disc although i have already and there is available space also will not delete plus play back is eratic

I have a Toshiba DVD/HDD recorder and found the disc recording unreliable. I tried re-formatting the disk each time and it worked, although the quality wasn't great. Now, I record on HDD all the time and dub to disk if I need to playback on another machine.
