Dead Vivitar vivicam 3945s?

After the original mains adapter burned out, and i could neither re-charge the battery or use it plugged into the mains, the previously fully working camera sat around for a few months until i purchased a new adapter for it. This adapter came from the same re-seller as the original, Sunny UK, but they had to supply me with an equivalent onto which they spliced my original socket. When i plug it in, the red charging light comes on on the camera, presumably telling me its receiving power correctly but there is no other sign of life from the camera! Could it now be the battery is just too flat to hold enough charge, it was never up to much even before (650mAh) or is it that the charger is somehow wrong or maybe a fuse or dust? It must be something fairly fundamental as it simply doesnt do a thing (even when plugged in and showing a red led) but i'd rather repair it and give it a new lease of life than chuck it away. Please help!
