Knocking noise in pipes?

When I run the sink taps in my bathroom, I occasionally hear a fairly loud knocking noise coming from near the cold water tank in the loft.

Someone has told me that they think the noise is caused by the tank value. It is bouncing when open because of the water's pressure as it fills the tank.

How could I prove this and then fix it?

Change the ballcock and valve in the tank.
