Hi George -
If the register has a 'PP' on the display, as you seem to indicate, it means there is some sort of problem with the printer. With the ribbon out, when you plug in the register, you should see the print head move back and forth a couple of times. If it does, that should clear the 'PP' error. If it doesn't, there is either something obstructing the mechanism (paper/ribbon jam, foreign object in the printer, etc.) or some kind of failure in the printer (motor failure, broken gear, etc.). If you've made certain there is nothing jamming the printer, the next best thing is to take it to a dealer to be looked at.
