It PROBABLY is just a simple small component or IC thats failed, which causes the tuner to stop searching properly.
I've Just had this happen to me, on a Visteon 6006E - (Visteon being the very common brand for this FM fault, from what I've read)
Best repair solution I've saw so far is to source a 6006E unit with a knackered CD mechanism for pennies on ebay, and swap the tuner board into your 'good' 6006E.
If you do opt for a replacement 6000 series radio, check the side to see if it says Visteon. If it does, i'd avoid, as it's only a matter of time before you get the same fault again.
I will post back here if I find the simple fix on my travels.
