Replace arm shaft bevel gear on Singer Fashion Mate 257?

I've been told the part #37231 Arm Shaft (upright) with bevel gear for a Singer sewing machine Fashion Mate 257 is no longer available. If this is true, could it be replaced with a part #445491 ?
