Light on all the time?

Hi.
Just replaced a light fitting in bathroom.
The old fitting had 6 spaces for wires. 2 black, 2 red, 2 earth.
The new fitting has 3 spaces, 1 earth, 1 brown, 1 black.
When I fit the 2 earth together, one red, 2 brown into spaces, the light is on all the time. If I put 2 red together the fuse blows.
I cannot remember how the old fitting was wired up.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for this Peccavi. It worked.

Permanent Live is very probably on the Red wire - it needs to be run off to the switch so you will need to join the two red wires together - Live coming in and Live off to the Switch - you do not connect the light to these two wires.

Of the two remaining Black wires one will be neutral and the other will be switched live - from the switch - to turn the light on and off. These two do NOT connect together or you will blow the fuse when you put the switch to On. Each of the black wires needs its own terminal hole - the light connects to each of the Black wires.

At the ceiling you will need a 4 way junction box - terminal strip or ceiling rose - You decide...

1) All the Earths together
2) All (both) the Red wires together and to Nothing else
3) Switched Live (black) - connect to one side of the lamp - often has a Red sleeve on it.
4) Neutral (black) - connect to the other side of the lamp
