How can I fix my TFT monitor - power overload?

I accidently used my laptop power supply with my monitor and it was working fine until a puff of smoke came out the top and then the screen went blank.

I was just wondering if it just needs a replacement capacitor or something easy that I can fix myself. I am pretty handy with the soldering iron and know electrical safety through my work so would be willing to get my hands dirty.

Any help would be appreciated otherwise its just an expensive piece of junk.

Hi James,

I have exactly the same problem with a tft monitor, and the wrong power supply made it bang with a puff of smoke too.

I am also handy with the soldering iron, so I opened it up to find a capacitor had blown.

I went to maplin and purchased two capacitors, and replaced the blown one.

Sadly the result was that although there was suplly to the monitor, you can hardly see anything on it because it's so dark and dull.

I am researching on this too and believe that the screen itself has blown.
