E1 just means wrong input, so it is a general error.
Firstly, try this:
Turn power off at wall
Turn key to P mode
Hold down SUBTOTAL while you turn power on at wall
Turn back to REG mode and try it again.
If you get a 'CLOSED' message, then you will need to log in.
Make sure you aren't using a decimal point if you are inputting prices as this can cause the error also.
