sounds like the carbon brushes in the motor a common fault in the hotpoint,cheap to repair,if you do it yourself,the brushes come with their holders,they can be black or white,we change them with the motor in place,but it may be easier for you to remove it,unplug the machine before you take the top off,remove the plug from end of the motor,undo the 13 ml bolts and with draw motor,thr brushes are on each side of the motoer,pull off the small wire(carefuly fromthe brush holder)and push a small scew driver in the lugs under the brush holder,and slide them out,refit new units and push them down carefully,replace the short wires,then reasemble the motor to the machine,place the drive belt around the drum pully and then aroun the motor shaft,then pull motor to the side to tension the belt as you tighten the bolts,replace the motor plug,replace the lid,and try the machine on spin,(empty)
