My Sanyo Xacti VPC-CA8EX Won't stay on standby?

I would Like to know why my Xacti VPC-CA8EX will not stay on standby when I close it, and why I don't get any sound on playback on video. Also the batteries do not hold their power for too long, when they used to last about 5 days. All of the batteries are brand new.
