Classic Tizio Table Lamp (with counter balance & spacer bars)?

The chrome spacer bars (with red plastic tips on each end) plastic ends are cracked and broken but if I wiggle them the light will come on but then goes off.

Will replacement of the spacer bars correct the problem ?

Other than being spacers, what is the function of these bars if any ?
