I assumje that you mean the pointer. (The arrow on the screen - the mouse is the device that you move.) You don't say what you were using instead of an external mouse (or what make and model your laptop is) so it's difficult to help much more.

put out some cheese! :) hehehe no, seriously now..i had a laptop that did the same thing. try restarting your comp and then opening the start menu. worked for me
